The term “Digital Detox” is hot. And, while we hear it dropped more and more often, implementing a moment without digital stimuli seems to be a difficult task. This is actually not surprising, as we are inundated – often unconsciously – with them. Even as sauna owners, disconnecting from electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers and televisions for a period of time (as the definition of the word dictates) is no mean feat. After all, we also believe in the benefits of digitization. For example, with ‘Saunavereniging Belgium’ we meet digitally every month, which saves us a lot of time and miles, and we can consult the latest wellness news at any time of the day, get inspired on various platform about mindfulness, wellness and well-being in general, and send our own tips for good physical and mental health into the world.
As soon as you walk into a spa, you see that digital solutions subtly triumph there as well. Just think of online reservations, electronic wristbands, linked to your personal account, which you use to open and close your locker and order food and drinks at the same time, and television screens to announce our exercise programs and upcoming events.
Fortunately, these are things designed to promote the comfort of our guests. When we talk about a “Digital Detox,” it’s mostly about temporarily interrupting reachability and digital connectedness, because it’s that continuous “on mode” that subconsciously causes a lot of stress.
We really shouldn’t tell you, but we believe repetition is the key to change: the so-called ‘blue light’ of screens we look at and the previously discussed uninterrupted accessibility have a negative impact on our sleeping habits as well as our concentration, productivity and creativity! Being constantly connected can also create a sense of anxiety’, just think of the well-known ‘Fear of missing out’ or fomo – an obsessive concern about missing out on social interaction or some other event.
We like to remind you as ‘wellness workers’ that ‘being’ instead of always ‘doing’ is the key to inner happiness. Deconnection’ helps you unwind and focus on the things that really matter. By exercising, taking a walk or creating something (with your smartphone in airplane mode), even if just for a moment, you can learn what it feels like to just be ‘here’. Having a hard time taking that step? Then a day of wellness might be the first step to success because, smartphones are banned in all public spas!
